Ready to Step on the Mats?


Taking your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class can feel exciting and nerve-wracking. At Renzo Gracie Newark, beginners are welcomed into an encouraging, family-style environment led by Professor Matheus Batista, a Pan American Champion who understands what it’s like to start from scratch.


What to Bring


All you need for your a beginner BJJ class is comfortable athletic clothing. The academy will guide you on gi fitting and hygiene etiquette. Arrive a few minutes early to stretch, meet your instructor, and get comfortable with the space.


What Happens in Class


Classes typically begin with a warm-up, followed by technique instruction and partner drills. You’ll learn core movements like guard, mount, escapes, and submissions. Professor Matheus and his coaches ensure everyone trains safely and understands each technique before moving on.


Etiquette on the Mats


Jiu Jitsu emphasizes respect and humility. Always bow before stepping on the mats, listen to your instructor, and treat your training partners with care.


Your First Week
